Library Services

Please see the following information regarding local library services:

Dear Parish Clerk

I recently wrote to you about the outcome of the Library Services Review consultation, which included changes to the Mobile Library Service.

In order to accommodate these changes we may have changed the day and possibly the time the service is normally delivered to your community. This is a result of having to re-align our routes and deliver to all the stops. The revised routes are available to view at www.somerset.gov.uk/libraryconsultation and will take effect from 01st August 2015. Where mobile library stops have been combined we have tried to take into consideration the views of the Parish Councils as where to hold the remaining stop/s.

I would be grateful if you could notify your local residents of any changes and continue to promote the service where possible, perhaps through local parish magazines or on notice boards. We will also be providing information about the changes on our mobile libraries and within local libraries over the next few weeks.

As a result of introducing new criteria for mobile library visits some stops will have been withdrawn. We understand that some individuals may be affected by the withdrawal of this service; therefore we would like to suggest some alternative options to support your local residents:

SCC Transporting Somerset – Many communities have local transport schemes. If you would like to know more about what is available in your community please visit http://www.movingsomersetforward.co.uk/public-transport or call Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224

SCC Grants Scheme (only available to communities where the Mobile Library service is being withdrawn) – Grants of up to £500 are available for one-off initiatives to support your local community access reading and library resources. For example, a grant could be used to create a library facility in your local village hall, or to purchase community transport to enable parishioners to visit their nearest library.

If you would like to know more about this scheme please view the attached flyer.  An application form has also been included for your consideration.  Grant funding flyer       Grant application form

Library Outreach Services – The Library service provides the Home Library Service and the Good Neighbour scheme for those who are unable to access Library Facilities. To find out how to access these services please contact Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224 or you can email the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) at Kirsty.Jenssen@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions relating to these changes, please contact please contact Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224 and/or email LibraryServicesReview@somerset.gov.uk.

Yours sincerely,

Sue Crowley
